Yesterday evening I had wrap up appointment # 3 of the week. If you're currently a Soiree bride, or recently one, you know what that is. My bride came to the appointment, frazzled, not at all looking like the excited brides that normally come to the appointment.
Things were looking like they were falling through on her officiant- the church wasn't working with her. She was tearing up as she was telling me about the phone conversations she'd had during the day. But, because she's one of my perkiest brides, she wiped her eyes and said she was "ready for our meeting", with a smile.
We started going over the processional order for her ceremony. I started asking about who would walk her down the aisle, and how her groom would be escorting the moms down the aisle. I looked up and she was crying again. But this time, it was for a happy reason: she was realizing how real her wedding finally was. We all stopped and smiled...her wedding will be in 3 weeks.
That is reason #1 for why I love weddings. Because the important stuff really matters. And who doesn't love love?

Feature Friday | Calligraphy By Jennifer

This week we are featuring the lovely Jennifer Gillespie, owner of Calligraphy by Jennifer. We've had the opportunity to work with her, and I can truly say you would never know she's half way across the country from Idaho. Great customer service, lots of communication (and I happen to love her Kentucky accent!), and beautiful work.
-How long have you been doing calligraphy?
I have been doing calligraphy since 2005

-What's your favorite thing about weddings?
My favorite thing about weddings is the actual process that goes into creating it. I love how each bride has a unique vision of how they want their wedding to look and feel. Everything from picking flower, narrowing down the cake choices and design, and the small details you have to decide on make it so much fun! The hard work and long hours that go into planning are worth it in the end.
-Favorite color?
I am inspired by all kinds of colors. I love color! Fuchsia, sky blue, teal, purple and lime greens are some of my favorites.
-Starbucks, Moxie, or Tulley's?
Starbucks!
-Recommend a book we should read?
I don't actually read books but love magazines. I'm a junkie for all wedding related magazines especially Martha Stewart Weddings and I love gossip magazines.

-What is one thing you can't live without?
I can't live without my chapstick, lipgloss and of course my hairbrush!
- Tell us about a time you either made a mistake & learned from it, or felt fear or doubt (either in your personal life or business) and overcame it?
I am not sure I have ever really had a time I have felt fear in my business but perhaps doubt. When I initially started I was pretty shy so meeting with clients was a bit intimidating at first. I realized as time went on clients wanted to talk to vendors that were confident and those that felt strongly about their product. I certainly didn't doubt what I was offering but I knew I had to break out of my shyness and learn to talk! I think years of doing calligraphy has by far the best thing to help me break out of this.
Thanks Jenn for sharing a little bit about yourself with us! Calligraphy By Jennifer offers several styles of calligraphy, from super formal to simple and elegant. She also ships nationwide. Visit her website for more information on pricing, styles, and services.

Finally, while you're there, be sure to check out Jenn's newest offering: Calligraphy Hand Stamps. They are perfect for return addresses and also a pre-wedding gift to yourselves for future mailing projects!

Making The Registry All About You
So you're the not the typical engaged couple. At least you don't feel like you're like everyone else. Maybe you don't want the Lenox china. Or the Vera Wang Love Notes toasting flutes. You're you, and your man is who he is too. That's why you love yourselves. And each other.
We thought it would be most entertaining to see if we could find not-so-typical registry ideas for certain people styles. We did have fun, and here are unique gift ideas for four main styles:
The World Traveler:
1. Logan Armless Chair from World Market 2. Tuscan urns from Pottery Barn 3. Personalized luggage tag from Etsy shop CestSuperbe
For the Laid Back Diva:
1. Drink dispenser from Pottery Barn 2. Rope Hammock from World Market 3. Oakland Living Lantern Fire Pit from Kohl's
For the Contemporary Side of Life:
1. Nambe Butterfly Salad Bowls from Macys 2. Eggshell stool from CB2 3. Salt Shakers from Fitzsu Society 4. Wood Bookcase from Linon Avante-Garde
For The Second Marriage:
1. Tent from Sports Authority 2. Crystal Vase from Gearys 3. Calvin Klein Luggage from Macys
These are just some ideas for out of the box registries. You don't have to always have the suggested items in the bridal magazines...make it work for you.

Miss....Now Mrs!
Many of you aren't married yet, but plan to be all married up sooner rather than later. There are always questions that come up about honeymoon plans, name changing processes, what documents to have, etc., so here are a few key tips that make sure you're on your way to name change and honeymoon travel success:
1) Always book your honeymoon arrangements under your maiden name. You'll need to present your ID, passport, and of course it will all have to match the ticket name exactly. You normally won't have time to get your name legally changed and recorded by the time you leave on your trip.
2) Check your state's government website for requirements; In Idaho you'll have to bring the gold-stamped, recorded copy of your marriage certificate to the Social Security office and DMV to change your license.
3) Make it easy on yourself and have someone else do the work while you sip on fruity cocktails in the Caribbean: sites like MissNowMrs.com will walk you through the initial steps and then take care of all the legalities for a low price. This is one of the more comprehensive online companies I've seen so far offering this service- and you can read all the reviews in media such as Brides, Get Married, and more.

Feature Friday | Creative Custom Cardboxes

Today's Feature Friday post is one that I've been dying to post- Marni of Creative Custom Cardboxes has such a great business idea as well as a perfect solution to MIA gift cards at weddings and parties. I "met" Marni on Twitter last year, and I've loved watching her inventory and product line grow, and just seeing all the new and interesting boxes she creates. By the way- just this year Marni welcomed a new little gift- baby Ben!

- How long have you been creating these specialty card boxes?

- How long have you been creating these specialty card boxes?
I've been creating custom made card boxes since my own wedding on July 6, 2008. I loved making my own and guest love it too! Since then i've been working on custom card boxes and decor for 100s of brides!
- What's your favorite thing about weddings?
Do i have to pick just one thing? I love that people can get together to celebrate the love of two people and the union of two families. I love the party aspect and the happiness of the joyous occasion.
- Tell us one thing about yourself we'd be surprised to learn about you?
Some people know this but many might be surprised to know that i'm a classically trained professional singer. I studied opera and musical theater in college and throughout Europe, have my master's degree in education and teach voice lessons to all ages!
If i say pink will that sound trite? I love pink and red!
- Tully's, Moxie, or Starbucks?
Since i'm not familiar with the first 2, i'd say Starbucks. I have a pretty healthy Starbucks addiction...and i'm not even that big of a fan of coffee!
- Recommend a book we should read?
Totally not wedding industry related but i'm a huge fan of the "True Blood" series (Southern Vampire Series by Charlaine Harris)
- What (or who) can't you live without? (product, article of clothing, personal item, person in your life, etc)
Another trite answer but i cannot live without my husband Aaron. He keeps me sane and helps me so much in life and business. Of course I couldn't live without my new baby Ben either!
- Tell us about a time you either made a mistake & learned from it, or felt fear or doubt (either in your personal life or business) and overcame it?
I think life is a series of mistakes that we turn into learning experiences. I've made plenty of mistakes in life, business, and love but i'm proud to say that i've learned from each experience.
When starting my business I of course felt fear and doubt. I knew nothing at the time about the wedding industry, about business or even how to make a website. With the support of friends and colleagues and the knowledge that I create a beautiful series of products, i persevered and got to where i am today. I still continue to learn and grow every day!
Thank you for sharing with us Marni! If you're a bride in need of a posh catch-all for your cards at the wedding reception (after all, this isn't your grandma's card basket anymore, Toto), you'll want to take a minute to browse some of her creations.

Love This: Pinterest
I'm all about finding new ways to express ideas and creativity. So when my friend Kristin posted about a nifty little site called Pinterest, I couldn't wait to try it out.
What is it? Well, it's basically a virtual inspiration board. Used by designers, bloggers, and home visionaries alike, it's a little cross between Twitter (you can follow boards) and a favorite blog (lots of inspiring photos with tags and categories).

I think using a site like this could help generate ideas for so many things: weddings, a party, or if you're in the nesting phase, it would really help with finding a design focus.Party planners and designers could use this as an idea bucket for putting something together for a client.

You do have to be invited to join, so if you're interested request to be on the waiting list. It's well worth the wait!
You can view the beginnings of my office remodel inspiration board here!

The Glamor Behind Wedding Planning
I remember once reading a comment from another wedding planner that said "wedding planning is 98% hard work and business, and 2% glamor". Loved that comment, because it's so true. J Lo certainly kicked us in the pants with her super high Gucci heels and super short skirt...but let's just say you won't catch me dead in a skirt on a wedding day. Heels? Ok that you'll probably see me in (it's rough when you're only 5' 2"...)
So let's back up a bit. Because this post is for brides and aspiring wedding planners alike. Brides, when you meet me I'm cute, polished and may be wearing a skirt. But after you hire me, things are looking a bit more like this:
After all, tennis shoes, a good ground measurer, and lots of vision are always needed when you're about to tackle a space like this:
(Yes this is an actual private residence event space happening in July! That's Annie, one of our interns ready to take furious notes)
Or when you need to start with a super blank slate:
So what's the appeal to a job like mine? Lots- it's the creativity, the challenges in both business and planning a squeaky clean event, and just knowing how much you really are helping someone. And then there's the 2% perks the planner was talking about, like meeting really fab people:
(Me with Randy Fenoli in March...please note: I was Sick.As.A.Dog in this picture. Really surprised the man touched me..see how nice he is!)
And seeing the end results you've worked so hard for:
So the moral of this story is this: Brides, know that you're hiring a wedding planner for so much more than the fluff of it all. You're hiring this consultant for financial advice, design advice, and for his or her expertise in areas you're not an expert at. It's ok to have your vision- we want that; but you don't have to make all the details happen- that's what you hire us for.
Aspiring wedding planners, vendors, and all that love weddings: keep in mind for every fun thing this job entails, there are about 92 not so fun things you need to work through. Be dedicated and committed, and you'll get the most out of it. Me, I love this job and couldn't ask for anything better. It's one heck of a career ride.

From The Experts: Tips For Choosing Your Photographer
This past Friday, we featured Greg from Greg Hoskins Photography. We love the classic, border line vintage feel to his photographs and the fact that he appreciates the individualism of each of his clients.
So far with our featured photographers we've heard a little about wedding day photos, engagement session tips, and now Greg is back to share his tips on actually choosing your wedding day photographer. After all, it's just like I tell my clients: You better like me (your wedding planner) and your photographer, because I guarantee you'll see us more than your groom on the wedding day!

Connection
Meet with your photographer candidates in person and choose a photographer not just based on art alone, but who you connect with on a personal level. Photography is a conversation between you and the photographer. The deeper the connection is between you and the photographer, the more authentic and real the conversation will be.

Trust
Once you have chosen a photographer that you have a deep connection with, put your unconditional trust in him or her. With trust, images are filled with authenticity, honesty, and sincere emotion. This requires you to open up parts of yourselves that you may not be used to sharing and to trust the photographer to capture those beautiful moments, even if it means doing something unique or different to support the artistic vision.

Befriend
View your photographer not as “the photographer,” but as a family member or close friend who is there to experience your wedding day with you. Think of this. When are you most comfortable? Is it around your friends? Is it around strangers? Now, who would you rather have capturing the most important day of your life – someone you are connected to deeply enough to call a friend, or someone you met once who just shows up with a fancy camera?

Thanks again to Greg for sharing with us, and hopefully you enjoyed seeing a little snippet of his work. Be sure to check out his website and blog for even more wedding goodness!

Wedding Network USA Today!
As some of you may know (and for those that don't know), this year I was appointed Boise's regional chapter director for Wedding Network USA. It's something I'm thrilled about- I started this career with full anticipation of always continuing my education, both for the best events possible and also for self-fulfillment. And that's what this awesome new association is all about- keeping its members in the know, whether it be about owning a (creative) business, industry trends, or just an excuse to
Being that this is such a new networking association (although largest in the Pacific Northwest- read about it here), we're hoping that it will blow up in Boise with lots of members.
Members can expect professional speaker panels, topics like cutting-edge trends (lighting, photography, floral, etc), plenty of networking opportunities (we'll hold monthly meetings), meet the experts round table events, and lots more.
If you would like more information on the association or to become a member, we are holding two informational meetings today during which our national director will be presenting and asking questions. The morning meeting will be held at 9:30a at Java downtown (6th Street), and the afternoon meeting will be held at 3:30p at the Red Feather Lounge in the Wine Cellar.
Feel free to shoot me an email if you think you can attend- hope to see you there!

Feature Friday | Meet Greg Hoskins
For this week's Feature Friday post, we are happy to introduce Greg Hoskins, of Greg Hoskins Photography. What can we say, we're loving the modern, yet almost vintage style he shoots (just wait until you see some of the pictures we'll show on Tuesday!); the industry around here is all sorts of buzzing about Greg and his work and so we're thrilled to get to know him a little better:
- How long have you been photographing weddings?
I have been photographing weddings for 3 years now. I attended my best friend’s wedding in Indiana a few years back and at the reception, the photographer had a slideshow playing of some of their engagement pictures as well as some of the pictures taken throughout the wedding day. So many people were gathered around watching these beautiful images play and I just stood back and observed everyone’s reactions to these images. I had an immediate draw to the connection these people had to the images and that was the moment I knew I wanted to photograph as many couples in love as I could.
- What's your favorite thing about weddings?
The raw emotion that swings from laughter to tears to joy throughout the day. All of the people and their connection with others. I feel incredibly lucky to be a part of a couple’s lives for a day and not only capture what happened, but how they felt.
- Tell us one thing about yourself we'd be surprised to learn about you?
I was almost kidnapped when I was younger…twice! Once with my brother walking home from school and once in a mall bathroom in Illinois. Be sure to ask me if you see me and I’d be happy to tell the stories.
- Favorite color?
It changes often but right now it’s blue.
- Tully's, Moxie, or Starbucks?
To be honest, I don’t like coffee. I like the smell and atmosphere of coffee shops, but not the taste of the coffee itself. You’re more likely to find me at a quaint pub that has a good quality IPA on tap.
- Recommend a book we should read?
Something else I don’t normally partake in is reading. I’m a very active person so sitting and reading a book is not really my speed. My wife Rachel reads enough books for the both of us, and then some. I just asked her this question and she recommends “Merle’s Door” by Ted Kerasote.
- What (or who) can't you live without? (product, article of clothing,
personal item, person in your life, etc)
Music. Music is an incredible way to feel connected to something, whether that something is a person, a place, a memory or event. I’ve started to experiment with incorporating music into my sessions and it has been a very moving experience so far.
- Tell us about a time you either made a mistake & learned from it, or
felt fear or doubt (either in your personal life or business) and overcame it?
It’s not a fear, per se, but a challenge. The challenge of letting go of all preconceived notions or “labels” I may bring to the day. I overcome that by realizing that every person I work with is unique and individual and deserves to be seen that way. This opens up endless possibilities and allows me to explore paths I may not have otherwise seen.
Thanks again Greg for sharing a little about yourself with us! And don't be surprised if you see us joining you at that little quaint pub for that IPA! Join us again on Tuesday for Greg's tips on choosing the right photographer for you. In the meantime, be sure check his website and blog out:

Thursday Tidbits | Hangers + Frames
So sometimes I get overly excited about things that maybe aren't necessarily the most innovative ideas we've seen. But still, sometimes, you see something, and you're just like, "that is an awesome idea. Why hasn't it happened sooner?".
For instance: photographers, brides, and blog stalkers- how many times have you seen a gorgeous dress, all 30 + pounds of gorgeous fabrics flown in from exotic places hanging....on an old dry-cleaner frame? Kind of takes the loveliness out of the whole picture doesn't it? This is why I'm loving anyone willing to take on the task of making an ordinary object pretty and whimsical:

These frames from Etsy shop Lila Frances are super cute, and make for a much better photo opp.
I've also become a little smitten with the idea of old, vintage frames. Loving them in unexpected places, like these trees (again not a new idea, I just like it. A lot):

In fact, stay tuned for our Inspiration Board Contest photo shoot coming up later this month. Let's just say we found a way to use that fantastic frame idea too!
Happy Thursday!

A Little Personal(ity)
So far 2010 has been epic. My business has grown, we've expanded a little (baby steps here!) and we're looking none other than forward. But everything hasn't come without fear, limitations, and obstacles to boot....nope, I won't ever be able to say I'm one of those people that had everything just kind of "come" to them.
Nope...everything I've wanted I've had to work pretty hard for. And I wouldn't say owning a business, being a wife, becoming a mom, learning the best way to plan a wedding, and using my brain in creative ways to design stellar weddings come naturally either. Still working hard on every one of those items.
Why the heck am I going into personal things, you ask? Well, for several reasons. Reason #1 is because I'm learning that what I want may not be what someone else wants. What someone else wants is a blog purely comprised of nothing but inspiration photos, weddings from around the world, styled engagement sessions. I realized (after several rounds of blog burnout) that I want this blog to be a total representation of me. So yes, that includes what inspires me ( read= inspirational photos of details, weddings, and other lovelies), what's up with my business (Soiree is my baby after all), my team (I heart them, don't care if I am biased) and just me. Because when you hire someone (especially in such a personal business as wedding planning), you want to know not only what you're getting, but who you're getting too, right?

Coming to this conclusion stemmed from many factors; one of which being this awesome article I read via Jasmine Star's blog. I think the article really speaks truly to any creative business professional- not just photographers. I especially loved how she quit looking at other photographer's images. There's one thing to know what's going on around you; another thing to begin to squelch your own creative drive and personality. Same thing happens to planners and designers, me especially. So don't be alarmed about me gracing this blog a little more often. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming :)
So here's to doing what YOU want- whether that be in life, business, your wedding, or all of the above. Sounds like a pretty sweet idea, if I do say so myself!

Making The Timeline Work For You
You've seen it in all the wedding magazines: each will have a section mapping out exactly what you need to do according to each month, week, and day leading up to your wedding. Well I'm here to tell you to scratch that and make up your own (yes, that was my official statement thank you very much). After one too many brides pulling her hair out because she feels she needs to include everything on that checklist into her wedding, or needs to abide by the month-to-month guide like it's the new world order.
Here at Soiree we make it simple. We break it into bite-sized chunks that won't overwhelm you, rather excite you. And it's always about your wedding- not anyone else's. So you won't be having an engagement party? No problem..take it off the list and out of your life. You only have 3 months to plan? Perfect- just need to adjust a little (and yes, we can say that we are personally planning 4- yes 4- weddings from start to finish in 3 months flat, so it's possible).
So here's a quick, no-frills guide to the basic timeline rules for planning your wedding. Why are they rules? Because if you follow these you'll be stress-free and down the aisle in style, of course.
1. Aim to have all your vendors reserved, hired, and deposit paid by the 6 month mark. Yes you'll still have much arranging and changing to do well after that mark, but at least you'll rest easy knowing you have your team of stellar professionals booked.
2. Aim to mail out your invitations by the 2 month mark. Since this means you'll want to have them already stuffed, weighed, and addressed in order to actually hand them over to the post office, I always count backwards; typically picking out and ordering your invites by month 4 (3 at the latest) is good. If you'll be having calligraphy, add at least a month on to your time frame.
3. Have all your rsvp's come back by the 3 week mark. This gives you at least one more week to call anyone that hasn't responded yet.
4. Aim to print and begin assembling items like programs, aisle cones, fans, etc. at the 3 week mark as well. This will free up your time to focus on place cards and your seating diagram as your rsvp cards come in.
5. Aim to have all your place cards, table cards, and seating diagram to the printer (or print them yourself) by the 2 week mark. This frees up your last week to visit with family, pack for your honeymoon, and allows for necessary proof checks and last minute issues that may arise.
And there. See how now you only have 5 main bullets to pay attention to? Everything else will fall into place if you schedule all your hiring and projects by this easy squeezy timeline.

Stylized Photo Shoots
There's quite a trend lately with using props and decor as part of photo shoots- engagement, wedding, and even the newest, the love shoot!

I was pretty smitten with this cafe love shoot, featured on the Found blog. What are your thoughts on super stylized shoots? Are you a bride that would rather let you shine through or bring props into the limelight too? We'd love to hear!

From The Experts: Tips For Your Engagement Shoot
Last week we featured Francesca and Nichole from Ampersand Studios, and today the ladies are back with their best tips for the best engagement shoot. Here's the scoop on what to wear, what to do, and what not to do during your pre-wedding photography session:
Engagement Shoot Tips
You should have an engagement session with the same photographer that will be shooting your wedding....
Being wedding photographers, we structured our packages to come with an engagement shoot. We feel like this is such an important thing to take advantage of because it gives us a chance to get to know our couples. So many times we have been told that the client has already gotten their engagements done by a family friend or another photographer. We believe that although you may already have had your photos taken, you should still get another shoot by the photographer that will be shooting your wedding. It will give you a chance to work with the photographer and experience their proofing and technique prior to your wedding day. You can never have too many pictures of yourselves! What do you have to lose?
Plus: You should BOTH get to know your photographer-usually the groom chooses to bypass the several interviews the bride has with wedding photographers. Sometimes the initial consultation is the only face-to-face interaction a couple will have prior to the wedding day without an engagement shoot. This leaves very little time to get to know your photographer, and more importantly: for your photographer to get to know YOU! (There is nothing like showing up at a wedding and having NO IDEA who the groom is!) It will also make you feel more comfortable with your photographer and they will know what they can get away with on your wedding day! We have found that our shots of couples who took advantage of their engagement session turn out much more relaxed and personal on the wedding day than those who choose not to have the engagement session.
You should look like yourselves in your photos....
This is the year 2010...the days of professional hair and make up for your engagement photos are so 1994! You should look and feel like yourself in these photos. Your wedding day is the day to get all gussied up, we suggest that you do your hair and makeup the way you do it every day (with maybe an extra coat of mascara to make the eyes pop for the ladies). This is your chance to capture who you are as a couple and how you look and interact together. It should be more of a lifestyle documentation. When will you ever have the chance to have someone spy on you and your future spouse just being...in love?
Hmm, what to wear....
It isn't a bad idea to wear your wedding colors, especially if you are including photos with your wedding invitations. If your colors are lime and fuchsia, your red polka-dot dress might not be the answer. This is a detail that many couples overlook and regret later on. Also, dress for your surroundings. If it is 52 degrees outside, you might need to bring a sweater. You don't want to be miserable, it will reflect in your photos. Also, you will probably have to do a good share of walking, so make sure you will be comfortable walking (and sometimes climbing, running, jumping...) without hurting yourself. Usually photographers don't mind if you bring a change of clothes, which I always suggest because it is a chance to change into something more comfortable and allows for more variety in your photos.
Have fun....
There is a reason you want to share the rest of your life with this person, so show us!
